Bufo, my male toad has been croaking around 4-7am! I don't want him waking anyone else up in the house, so I immediatly turn on the room light, and he then stops for the night. Will he start doing this more frequently, it's day 3 of this "croaking at night" dilemma, and it is getting worse:
First Night: Short Shrill Peep
Second Night: One full loud Croak
Thrid Night(this morning at 6:50am): Two full loud Croaks
Why is he doing this? Is it because of the female toad in his tank? Should I move her to her own tank? What about lighting, could that help? If I plugged a dim night-light in beside the tank, would that stop him from doing this!?
I really need some help here everyone!
Thanks,
~Royce
Hi Royce:
Making noise is what male toads like doMost species of toads are nocturnal. I don't think removing the female would do any good. The male will probably increase his calling thinking he is going to attract a mate. A dim night light might work, go ahead and try it. American toad females choose their mates based on the individual characteristics of the male's call.
Putting up with calling frogs is one of the "hazards" of keeping frogs. I keep African clawed frogs and their call is very loud and can be easily heard throughout the house. The cool thing about this species is that both males and females call so I listen to a duet every night. Often, the duets can last several minutes. I am used to the calling and can't sleep without it![]()

It's quite natural for amphibians to croak, especially at night. My White's Tree frog does this almost every night between 12:00 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. I don't find it bothersome, nor does my sister who shares my room. It is quite possible that he is trying to attract the female with his croaking. Or it could be that the barometric pressure over the past few days has had an effect on him. When there is heavy rainfall or snowfall or thunderstorms, my Whites Tree Frog tends to croak more than normal. If it's the weather that's causing him to croak, there's really nothing you could do. You could try removing the female for a few days and see what happens, but what Terry says makes perfect sense (I have observed this behaviour in male Wood frogs). If you haven't changed his temperature, humidity levels, or lighting schedule over the past few days than these might not be the issue.
I'm currently still a student, so I still live at home, I have no problem with the croaking at night, but my father does... wonder if I closed my door if that would help?
I think closing the door would help a lot. I can't really hear my frogs that well through the closed door.
Haha, your dad and my dad are complete opposites lolol......my dad can practcally sleep through anything lol!
As Frog Mom said, shutting the door would help muffle the sound![]()
Haha, well my dad loves nature like me, but he thinks I'm "torturing" my toads by keeping them and their chirping because they want out... I'm reeeeeeeally torturing them... that's why there so fat!Hahaha!
Haha, my Dad can't get enough of nature either lol (although I think my brother is more of a wilderness person than my dad because he's always building forts or running through the forest lol :P)!
You think your toads are fat, you should my frogs lolol!!
Haha, me and your brother sound quite alike, with the exception that I would rather hike through a forest than run though...I have 160 acers of land, at have 8 teepees built at different spots when I want to go camping!
I find amazing hwo you ccan raise wood frogs, I tried a few years back, and I couldn`t even get the thing to eat! And I raised it from a tad! Yes... I'd imagine your frogs are fat, normal wild are wood frogs are fat, I can't imagine pet ones!
Wow, you have a huge property!! That must be cool....we have only like 1.5 acres of land and its all forest lol. Yup, that definitely sounds like something my brother would do. He, and everyone else in the family, loves camping; that's neat that you can go camping on your own land! I prefer hiking too...in fact we go hiking everyday (sometimes up to 6 miles). It's apart of our homeschool P.E. lol.
Thank you! Yeah, even though Wood frogs are hardy frogs in the wild, they are very particular about their set-up in captivity :P. It's kind of ironic. I bet your toads are pretty happy, especially since they croak or at least the male does. You have a nice realistic terrarium set for your toads too.
Haha "toadally" lololol!
