The past few evenings my 2 toads (1 male, 1 female) have been frantically trying to get out of the tank, climbing the logs then jumping to the top banging their heads on the screen lid, and trying to climb the glass. We’ve had some storms the past few nights, would this have anything to do with it? Not much else has changed in their behavior, the male has slowed down on eating but seems very healthy and strong. Any input would be appreciated.
are they WC?
how big is the tank?
maybe they just arent used to it. my toad used to do that until i upgraded it to a 20L
My Toad has been doing the exact same thing. I have 2 in the same habitat but only one is insistant on escaping. I don't know the sex of my toads but the smaller one has burrowed and stays under most of the day while my larger toad keeps jumping up and banging his head like yours does. I sure hope someone replies to your post with some advice. My toads are Texas Gulf Coast toads.
I took them from the wild when they were ¼ inch long back in the spring. There are 2 in a 29 long with lots of room to dig and plenty of hides. It’s just been the past few nights that Rufus (Fowler’s)has been doing this. It breaks my heart to sit and watch him bang his head on the top cover. I may return Rufus back to the wild were I found him. Rosie seems much more content so I don't know if it may be a gender thing or not.
The craziness stopped once the rain moved out of the area. So here is my thought.......since they are land critters, don't climb trees and not real good swimmers they need to move to higher ground when rain in coming. Hey, maybe the toads are the new weathermen?!? So next time we expect rain I think I'm going to put a cork sheet on the inside to cushion the blow until I can get a higher tank. I can't believe my husband suggested me to spend more $$ on the toads.
My two toads are similar to yours. My male, Bufo is very content, dosen't try to escape (anymore) just sits around, burrows, etc. But my female, Bruce, tries to escape all the time, tries to climb the glass, jump out, etc.
