Hi everyone, I'm new to the forum.
I was hoping someone could help me out.
I have had a female American Toad for three weeks today.
I rescued and have been rehabilitating her after my mom (who was digging up a post) unknowingly chopped off her right front leg and cut a large section of skin on her side, open. she has done great and progressed very quickly. I've kept her in a clean container with only a damp cloth which i change daily. she has almost completely healed and had no sign of infection (didn't stink, not lethargic) has been eating plenty and adapting well to being a tripod. but today i noticed her eye seems to be covered with a clear fluid and the side of her face is a bit swollen like some fluid is under the skin. she seems to be uncomfortable and acted restless (especially when i took pics) I just want to know if there is anything i should do or just leave it alone, since her body healed so well...? I'm attaching pics of her eye. thank you in advance!!! <3
Hello.
Oh my, well, I'm sorry for your toad pal, but it's great that your taking such great care of her.
I can't say for certain what's going on, but I know when my turtle's eye is irritated, the white membrane[used to keep foreign matter out] closes over her eye to protect it from further irritation. So perhaps something similar is happening with your Toad, Although I'm not sure if they have multiple membranes like a turtle... but even still.
Also, you said your mom struck the side of her face/body? Maybe she's just having a reaction to it or has a slight infection that wasn't noticable before?
I'd say contact Dr.Frye; dr.frye.dvm@sbcglobal.net . He can give you a better diagnosis and help you with your toad pal.
Good luck!.
Thank you for the link! i will contact him. does he charge a fee for answering questions?![]()
toads do have a nictitating membrane so hopefully she can do like your turtle.
her face was not injured in the accident (thank god) here's her full back story. lol
we were doing yard work at an elderly friend's, mom was digging with a shovel and the toad was burrowed down in the dirt. the shovel cut off her arm and cut open the skin on her side.
her skin did what a cat or rabbit's would do if cut (idk if you've ever seen either one with a cut) and it pulled back exposing half of her body. i'll attach pics.
toads' blood clots faster than humans or mammals so her arm had stopped bleeding by the time i got her to the car. i used ice to clean the dirt from the injury by holding it to melt it a little. i then put a handful of ice cubes in the bottom of a small, hard plastic cooler and put a cloth over them, then set the toad on it and closed the lid. i did that to bring down her body temp to near hibernation to keep her from stressing and trying to move. i kept her "on ice" for three days (cleaning and changing the ice and cloth daily) and then let her come back to normal temp. she started eating on day 4 and made amazing progress. i've kept her in the cooler all this time because its a small environment i can keep clean easily. she has had no problems prior to this eye thing.here are the pics i took one week after the accident: you can imagine how bad it was because these pics show she'd already started healing.

Well, I can't say for certain wether or not he'll charge you, as I've never used his help before, but plenty of people here look to him for help, so perhaps he can just give you a diagnosis and some advice. I would imagine advice is free, but I heard you can buy medicines from him as well.
Those pictures... wow. It really was a good thing you took care of her, because she probably would've died, what with her flesh and what not exposed.
If her eye has a membrane that can cover it[voluntarily/involuntarily], then that could mean that something is messing with her eye and is irritating her or it could be slightly infected. My turtle actually has 2 membranes in addition to the normal one. One for above/out of the water use[the normal one], one to keep water from entering her eye and the white one to keep out foreign matter[which she also closes when she sleeps].
Perhaps something touched her there. I heard some feeders like Crickets, can bite a frog/toad, so perhaps that could be the cause [if you feed her crickets].
I'm not as savvy as I wish I was, so I hope someone with a better answer will come along.
okay thank you so much. yeah i was also thinking about the crickets. i think one may have hopped on her face and its spiky little leg may have pokes/scratched her eye.i'll email him and ask. thank again. i'll keep you updated. :3
okay, so yesterday i checked her and her eye was weeping a bit more of the clear-ish fluid and i noticed what looked like a small pin head sized blob of mucus in the bottom back corner of her eye. i used a folded paper towel to wipe at it and it was actually something stuck down inside the eyelid that was starting to work its way out from the fluid lubricating it. i wiped at it again and got it to move a tiny pit out (she had her eye pulled in but i could access the whatever it was in her eye, "thing") and i was able to get a hold of it with my finger nails and i pulled gently and out came what i found upon close examination to be a piece of a cricket's leg!!! O_O her eye seems to be doing a LOT better already. here's a pic of the piece of leg. you can see the blob at the end and that was all that was sticking out. i cant imagine how bad that must have hurt to have it all the way under her eyelid!!! D: im just glad its out!!!
