Lightbulb Need american toad enclosure ideas/help

Ok so last night I found a american toad and I put him/her in our ten gallon tank. The tank had fish in it last time we used it so there is some gravel and some fake plants in the tank and I have some forest substrate from when we had a hermit crab but I still need to put it in the tank. Also for water I just put some under the gravel because we don't have a land divider or a bowl yet. Here's a pic also don't worry this setup is only temporary. I will be going to buy some supplies here soon.Name: pics and videos 017.jpg

Size: 112.6 KB I could really use some ideas on how to setup a nice home for my new toad. Also if you could please post some pics of your tanks too. It would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Also for the safety of the toad I will be removing the gravel so don't worry.

    Hi there,
So, you've decided to keep the toad? IT is somewhat controversial to keep wild caught toads, but that's another topic.
I commented on one of your photos earlier....
As I said then, I would remove the gravel immediately and replace it with fine coconut fiber (found at any pet store) or the forest substrate you already have may be fine if it's not too chunky.. the gravel poses a problem if ingested. It could be potentially fatal.
Next, I would provide a little hide, like a half coconut shell or stone hide, again found at any pet store.
Do you have a thermometer and hygrometer? Those are useful for monitoring the environment. You also need a bowl for soaking.. which looks like you're already getting.
The plants are good and visually appealing so I would keep those.
Goodluck! Your toad is very cute!

Sorry, just read you're removing the gravel..

Bottom layer-thin layer of charcoal then hydro balls, on top of hydro balls place screening material.
Eco earth/organic planting (50/50) soil w/OUT perlite or vermiculite. Top layer mostly leaves, crushed and whole. If you use mosses, use live moss that are holding together. Once the toad has been in viv for a month add some springtails and isopods (pillbugs) to keep the viv living so not to spoil. I've found using a dish to feed has worked the best. This tank has been going strong for over 10 months.

    I hope this is helpful.

Looks much healthier for the toad. Not sure how big he/she is, but you don't need a big water dish. Something big enough for it to soak in, they are not strong swimmers. Also you know NOT to use tap water, it'll kill em'.

Please read this before you continue with anything else. It can mean life or death to the toad. Frog Forum - Toad Basics - Keeping ground-dwelling Toads. A care sheet for Bufo, Anaxyrus, Spea, Scaphiopus, Ollotis, Alytes, Pelobates

yea I know that tap water will kill them that's why I have a aqua safe water conditioner for him. Also thanks for the care sheet I did all the research already though but it will come in handy in the future.

I just want to say THANK YOU for doing the research. I've seen way to may people that grab a animal, then try to make due with what they have, and the poor critter suffers because of their ignorance. Hope you and your new friends are together for many years.

Yea I Love any type of frog/toad and I hate to see them die so I do all the research before I even get the frog/toad. Also I just spent $21.00 at the pet store for his hide, another plastic plant, some crickets and the eco earth.

Nice change to the tank. My toad has a very shallow dish, just deep enough for him to happily sit in. It is large in diameter, but not depth. He sits in it ALL the time!!!

Thanks Amanda for the complement and that water dish is the only one I have and I didn't want to spend money on buying one. Also I just dug it into the soil more so he can get to it easier.
