Hi guys,
I just made this in attempts to find help. I currently have 2 ADFs- Kermit and Miss Piggy and a algae eating fish (its not a placo) in a 10gallon tank.
I have noticed my frogs several times in the past "hugging"but never any eggs even though we watched closely for them.
my frogs are currently "hugging" again right now... I have done a lot of reading on mating ADFs and what to do with the eggs etc and I get it. This brings me to my problem- I never see any eggs. I am not sure if they just have a quickie and dont produce any eggs? or maybe we were wrong and theyre both males or both females (I find this VERY unlikely) and doing it as a dominant thing? I would take the eggs out as soon as I saw them, except for I never see them produce any. Kermit just "hugs" Miss Piggy for a while and thats it... he lets go sooner or later, having produced no eggs, and nothing ever happens.
Why is this?
Is there something I can do to promote egg production? or encourage Kermit to hang on a little longer?
Thanks!
Leave them be, they don't sound like they need any help. Are you in a position to raise tads right now? They are hard to grow out where ADFs are concerned.
The eggs are tiny black specs. I find them hard to see. Anytime I "tried" to breed these guys I used a seperate bredding tank that was bare bones with floating live plants for the eggs to stick to and then removed the adults back to their home tank.
Don't worry about it. Your frogs maybe immature, two males or two females. Males will have the following sexual characteristics:
1) call
2) nuptial pads, looks like darkened "gloves" on the fingers
3) 2 small pimple-like glands behind the front legs
Maturity in about 9 months. If you are interested in breeding them, there are several threads on the forum that will explain the process. I understand that they are difficult unless you are prepared. hugging = amplexus.

I know my frogs were hugging for what seemed like FOREVER with no results. Finally after they matured enough (at least this is what I am assuming), I noticed the one female (who I originally thought was male LOL) started getting very bloated to the point where I was paranoid about dropsy. Well low and behold one night I came home to find eggs....I'm talking a TON of eggs. If it happens you will DEF notice it. If you find just little white circles in the water they are unfertilized, if they are half brown/half white and covered in a jelly-like substance, you should have taddies in no time. Important thing is to have a separate beta tank or something on hand so you can move them before they get eaten....if you are going to attempt to raise them, it's hard! but worth a tryHope this was helpful!
