    Default Australian Green Tree Frog

    Hi all

I have only had frogs for about 6 months so I'm still a newbe

I bought a 2 and 3 yr old Green Tree Frog about a week ago and i have noticed a few things.

They were very underweight so i have been feeding them up and watching them closely. One poops more solidly than the other who basically poos
cricket water ... and the smell is foul.

I was wondering what this sounds like and what treatments can i do to help them along??

any feedback would be greatly appreciated i love all my frogs and i would hate to have any die

Their fecal should not have a foul smell. Sounds like parasites to me.

Hello and welcome to FF! Starting multiple threads to deal with same issue is only going to confuse forum members trying to help you: http://www.frogforum.net/general-dis...melly-poo.html.

First thing you need to do is set-up a hospital/quarantine type enclosure (bare tank with 3-6 layers of daily changed damp paper towels for substrate and damp paper towels covering 3 sides for stress reduction, water dish, and minimal plastic decor to help frog feel safe) and move your frogs there. Then take both of them to veterinary with poop from both frogs to get fecal tests and determine the parasite's they have and a proper treatment. Panacure is normally used for worms, but if protozoan the prescription is different (i.e. Metronidazole). Frogs have to be weighted to determine proper dosage.

You will also need to sterilize their current enclosure (clean with 10% chlorine solution and rinse well), throw away substrate and everything that can't be sterilized including plants). Plastic decor can be boiled for 10 minutes and wood can be baked in oven or boiled too.

If they stop eating, a 15 minute bath in unflavored Pedialyte (or local brand) solution (1 part Pedialyte to ten parts 80F dechlorinated water) will help perk them up.

Here is a link to their care sheet to ensure their needs are being met: Frog Forum - White's Tree Frog Care - Litoria caerulea . Also, please answer these question here to ensure we are not missing anything to improve your frogs health. Thank you !

The following information will be very helpful if provided when requesting assistance with either your frog or enclosure. Hi I will be organising a poop scoop and fecal on tues after the public holiday tomorrow

I tried to delete the first thread ... but i couldn't work out how and wanted it to be clear to anyone kind enough to help that they are Australian Green Tree Frogs

As far as other factors. I have had them one week i was told they are 2 and 3 yr olds. They were a little on the thin side when i picked them up and they are fabulous eaters. Quite active, Eating and Pooping fine. They seem to stretch their necks up and back a little here and there which i find a bit odd. They have clear eyes and croak here and there. I also got the tank they were housed in. I thoroughly boiled and cleaned the enclosure inside and out with a watered down betadine solution. Then i rinsed with boiled water. ( recommended by local reptile shop) before i put previously boiled water into there enclosure with a pump and heater. The heater is set at 26C. They have some cleaned riverstones to sit on in the land area.

the enclosure is 60x40x40. with a mesh lid. The temp of water sits at 26c .. inside the tank is 23-24C (checked with a infra red thermometer)

They are very similar in size.

    Humidity sits at 80%

I only use pre boiled and rested water for misting

main food source crickets with gutload calcium

    uvb lighting

i see regular droppings that seem to have firmed slightly ... but still definately not the same as my other healthy Green tree Frog. more like really wet peanut butter at times.

eating is not a problem i give them crickets daily at the moment to monitor that they are eating and pooping

i was told one was a rescure frog and one was bought at a reptile shop as a froglet and they have been together since.

at the moment i remove poop and rock clean the rock and put it back in once dry again.

    very minimal handling so far

Thank you very much for helping so far ... does any of these symptoms or information help any further??? i am worried about the little guys and only want them happy and healthy

Good, at least one of them has an intestinal problem and since they live together are probably both infected.

the enclosure is 60x40x40. with a mesh lid. The temp of water sits at 26c .. inside the tank is 23-24C (checked with a infra red thermometer)

Recommend raise air temp to 29C (85F) for day. Night can drop between 20 to 24C.

I only use pre boiled and rested water for misting

You still need to treat tap water destined for water dish or water feature with dechlorinator like Tetra Aquatize or Seachem Prime. For misting can use distilled water to prevent water spots but avoid spraying frogs.

main food source crickets with gutload calcium

Still need to dust food with CA 2X and vitamins 1X weekly on different days with skip day in between. Repashy and RepCal make good products.

i see regular droppings that seem to have firmed slightly ... but still definately not the same as my other healthy Green tree Frog. more like really wet peanut butter at times.

Let us know what veterinary finds. Good thing is your frogs are still eating and pooping.

Hi, went ahead and gave you some tips to add to previous post. Do take frogs with recent poop samples to vet, need to fid out what is causing runny poop. Good luck !

    Ok so fecal done today

turns out prior to me having them they were too exposed to their own poo

    mixed population of flagellated protozoa

    oxymonad
    trichomonads
    diplomonads

so i have oral meds for 5 days for them .02 mls Flagyl Suspension

which i have found is rather interesting ... even tho they will take crickets by hand trying to shove a syringe in while there mouth opens is another story :P

have been told to gently try a credit card or soft baby spoon etc ... so will see how i go

now i will continue to fatten them up and spoil them rotten

Haven't done it; but read here it's easier when a person hold frog and opens mouth and another administers medication. Would search the term "force feed" in forum to read more about it .

Reptile Products You Can Trust | Reptile Basics Inc this works great for giving liquid meds. Or you can inject the meds into the feeder bug if they will tong feed. I've found wax worms or butter worms work best using this method. This is how I was able to get my 3 WTF healthy when having to medicate them.
