I'm having an argument with my friend over the minimum dimensions that will comfortably house a toad. Anyone have suggestions? He says 18x18x18 I say 24x11x12. What do you think?
"Look on the wall behind you. Look at that little girl's face. I know you've seen it. But you know what she's never going to be able to see? She's never going to be able to see the simple wonder of a leaf in her hand. Because there's not going to be any trees. Now you think about that."

What kind of toad will it be? Toads can go from 1/2 inch long to 10 inches long
Litoria caerulea 1.1.0 (White's Tree Frog)
Lampropeltis triangulum hondurensis 0.1.0 (Anerythristic Honduran Milk Snake) Tliltocatl albopilosus 0.0.2 (Curly Hair Tarantula)
Aphonopelma hentzi 0.0.1 (Texas Brown Tarantula)
Avicularia avicularia 0.0.2 (Pinktoe Tarantula)
Brachypelma smithi ex. annitha 0.0.1 (Mexican Giant Red Knee Tarantula) Monocentropus balfouri 0.0.2 (Socotra Island Blue Baboon Tarantula)
Harpactira pulchripes 0.0.1 (Golden Blue Leg Baboon Tarantula)

I've kept plenty in a 10 gallon tank, 20 x 11 x 13. Works just fine, though I wouldn't keep more than one adult per 10 gallon tank.
More space is nice, but it makes feeding more difficult.
Sorry, but that doesn't completely answer my question. What are the minimum dimensions for a two to three inch American toad?

Just my quick opinion,,a 3 inch toad can go in a 10 gal tank..but to answer your first question,I'd go for the 24 in over the 18 square,..I like to give my animals room to move and spread out.they also fit tighter up against a wall.
You can more or less throw the height dimension out of the equation for toads, but conventional wisdom seems to say a 10 gallon tank, which has a footprint of 20 X 11.
I agree that a 10 gallon is adequate for only one, I would have dimensions of 30x12x12 for three american toads, For fire bellies, Three can fit in a 10 gallon 18x12x12
and for larger toads a 40 breeder or 55 gallon would fit one cane toad, in my mind this is the minimum
"A Righteous man cares for his animals" - Proverbs 12:10
1.0.0 Correlophus cilliatus
2.1.0 Bombina orientalis
0.1.0 Ambystoma mexicanum
0.0.1 Ceratophrys cranwelli
1.0.0 Litoria caerulea
1.1.0 Dendrobates auratus "Nicaraguan"
0.0.2 Dendrobates tinctorius "Azureus"
For an American Toad, myself would provide a 15 gallon tank (24x12 area) as minimal; but I tend to over house all my pets. If your friend likes to overdo that and provides another couple thousand square inches he/she can do that too. You are not miss caring for your toads Logan!
Remember to take care of the enclosure and it will take care of your frog!
