I am using coconut fiber as a substrate for my baby pixie frog and I am coming up on having him for a month soon. From what I have read I should be doing a total change of the substrate at this time. That seems like a lot of substrate that is in good condition to just throw out, he only poops in his water, which is cleaned daily. My question is, is there some way to clean it and then reuse it? Maybe have two batches of substrate that get cycled monthly? Thanks in advance for your help!
how big is ur enclosure??
The substrate needs changing because the frog pees in it and excretes mucus all over it, leading to nitrate buildup, and possible fungal and bacterial growth. I guess someone could rinse it thoroughly, and then bake it the kill off anything that might grow in it, but being coconut husk, I think the baking required might just turn it to charcoal. If you had access to some intense uv setup you could possibly destroy anything growing in it that way, but it seems like a bit of a hassle to save 3 dollars a month. Just use it as mulch.
It's a 20 gallon. Thanks for answering the question I forgot to ask! I'm still used to my lizards all in one business. Makes sense though as my husband has been peed on!
