    Default Heating Pad

I have a heating pad for my tomato frog and I'm wondering where is the best place to place it in my enclosure. I have a ten gallon terrarium and don't know if I should take the sticker off the heating pad and stick it on the outside. What do I do? I isn't the most hottest heating pad and it probably wouldn't fry my frog.

    Default Heating Pad

Normally, the side of the tank is the best place for a heating pad for a frog tank. The underside is not wise in case the frog burrows. Even if it's not a burrowing species, most heat pads don't get hot enough to heat the tank through the substrate. A ceramic heat emitter may be a better option for heating the tank.

    Smile Re: Heating Pad

Hello, I read a care sheet on tomato frogs and it does seem that they bury themselves. So ya putting on the bottom may not be wise. Most of these burying frogs do this to cool themselves and to get out of the direct sunlight. So if it is on the bottom he may not be able to regulate his body temperature properly because he wont be able to cool when he buries himself, hopefully I said that properly. L.O.L So if your going to use a UTH you should place it on the side or the back, and a little tip if you have the small 10-20 gallon UTH don't open and bring it back and get the next size up. That small one isn't going to nothing for you, and the next size up will be to big for the side so put it on the back. I use 2 in the winter to keep my temps up and I have a small 10-20 on the end and a 30-40 on the back and they are placed so they almost touch. I don't know how cold it is were you live but you may only need the big one on the back, and I did this for my pacman frog. The warm end hits 84f, the middle sits at 80f and the far end is 78F and these are day time temps and then at night I dim the big UTH and everything drops about 3 degrees. This way he can move through out his tank during the day and night to were the temps make him more comfortable. Or you can go easy the route and get a Ceramic heat emitter or some lights. hope this helped abit.

Well, I'm from cold Canada, as my flag says. I do have to say I don't know if the heat would go through the glass. Does that mean I have to take the sticker off because apparently that's not the best option, IDK. But I don't know if my heating pad will heat through the glass. If you could take pictures of how it looks and show me that would help me very much.

hi, ya I guess I could of looked at the flag and figured out its pretty cold were you are more then likely. L.O.L Here is a picture of how my UTH's are setup for my pacman frog. There has is other plants that go in the bare end but I took them out for the picture. The big one in the back is hooked up to a dimmer and that's how I drop the temps at night.

Sorry to ask since I don't know very much about heating pads but how does that make heat for your frog if it's on the side of the terrarium. Does that mean I have to take the sticker off of the heating pad.

Yes it will heat the terrarium. The Heating Pad will heat the glass and the glass will dissipate the heat into the terrarium and warm the tank. It is not my favorite way to heat a terrarium but it is a common way. To put the heating pad on the side you would want to peal the "cover" off the adhesive side and stick it to the tank.

I prefer to use Ceramic Heat emitters. It provides a radiant heat to the tank from above. It can heat the tank Day and night and produces no light. They last much longer than heat bulbs and heat the tank without zapping much of the humidity from it.

I'm curious as to how you arrange the CHE over the tank. Do you use the hanging light bracket I think by exo terra? Thanks to you I use a 150 watt CHE for my 90g hermit crab tank and it works great, but I'm curious how it would work for frogs.

I used the exo terra or zoomed hanging bracket thing. It sticks to the side of the tank and you can suspend the light from it.

This is a really old picture, but if you look close at the tank in the background you can see a ceramic heat emitter hanging over the tank using one of those bracket things.

I adjusted the hight of it till it had the tank temps where they needed to be at. ..... AND wow that was an awful tank lol

Hahahaha, I didn't even notice the step stool. That's creativity at its finest... if you're an optimist . Some would deem it, what's the word, ghetto. Thanks Paul.

Thank you, Thank you! I am humbled and honored to accept both these awards. I would like to thank my wife for getting me addicted to frogs, this forum for showing me we can do anything if we try hard enough, and the step ladder manufacturer for not including a warning label about using it as a Frog QT stand. Thank you!

Oh man it was so Gheto lol. I needed a place to set the QT tubs for the new Red Eyes and wanted to keep them by the Tank so I rigged that monstrosity up lol. I taped a piece of wood on the top to hand the heat lamp from.. Man SUPER GHETO lol. Add in the TV tray the QT tubs sat on and I am not sure how I didn't kill all the frogs and my family in the process lol.

Hey, I heard they're coming out with a new TV show in 2016. I think it's called "Innovations by Paul". Can't wait to see it
