The Many Colors Of Frogs
I thought it would be interesting to see everyone's pictures of their frogs when they are different colors, and how they look when they change.
Post pictures of the many colors of your frog's "moods"!
Here's a few of Hilo..... oops the 3rd pic is Niko
I can tell my frogs apart, no matter what color they are, by the markings on their backs. The markings are like a fingerprint, very distinctive and different on each frog.
Here's a pic of Hilo when she is brown..

And this is why.....Kurt....blue phase is better.![]()
My firebellies turn darker, to a muddy green, when they are in the water and bright green when they come out on land. My green Red Eye turns darker green at night when the lights are off and turns lime green when I pick him up or turn on the lights. When he is sleeping in the day he is lime green.
Here's Niko and her many colors.... You can see in the first picture she is thinner, it was taken in June. The second picture when she is brown she is fatter, it was taken in September. But notice her markings, it's the same frog!
Here's Waldo, Gray Treefrog. Most of the winter he's the light gray (2nd pic), sometimes with a light green lip and edge around his side (as in the 4th pic).
This summer he's been the light green (1st pic), it's a few degrees warmer in the summer and he's trying to impress the ladies.
When he's wet after I mist the cage, he turns a darker version of whatever shade he's currently in (3rd pic, taken in the winter). He is also wet here, but he's definitely darker.
The green patches under the eyes never have a noticeable change. I've noticed the turning darker when wet or in high humidity is a pretty standard response in the 'wild' grays around here as well.
The larger of my american toadlets is constantly a brighter tan color like the ones you find in books and such. While the other ones are darker, the smallest 3 legged one being the darkest with even rober markings on its face. Each of them have different patterns and markings though.
Also they change color when I put em in water. Sometimes the larger one will look darker brown and the smaller ones will look bright tan.
Waldo is sssoooooooooo cute. I cant wait for my little GTFroglets to get bigger and chubbier. I have them in my old fish tank that came with the standard hood. There was an opening in the back of the hood for the heater, filter, air tubes, etc. that I covered with a screen. Across the top of the tank are two straps that run front to back, I'm quessing to ensure the hood wouldn't fall in. My froglets perch up there and since it is black I can always tell where they've been. Right now they're are too small, too many and my camera is unable to capture the details of their little chublet bodies for good pics. When I can I'll be happy to post them...I can't wait!
Lesley, What kind of frogs are these? I didn't know so many species of frogs changed colors, I was under the impression that only the hyla versicolor did. I am learning so much here, it's fantastic or frogtastic!!!Love the pics.
Great pics Katie!![]()
Not sure if this topic is still active but.
^ Retsu-chi when inactive. (Sorta like Pikmin in Pikmin 1. His color is less vibrant.) He used to turn a strong brown but ever since I gave him a powerful heatlamp he's been staying varying shades of green.
V Retsu-chi when wide awake.
My other two on the other hand...
Sometimes they're brown.
Sometimes they're green.
Crystal6,
Retsu-chi is adorable! Love the second picture! Thank you for sharing.
Paul,
Always love to see your frogs. You know I love that clay colored PCF! Gorgeous!
