Hello all,
So I am fairly new to keeping frogs or amphibians in general as pets and had a question for ya.
I recently set up my terrarium for my whites tree frog and have been doing a good job of maintaining temp. and humidity, but the terrarium is giving off a fairly strong earthly smell. Almost like a smelly swamp or something. Is this normal? Especially after only being set up for 48 hours. I was thinking that it may be because the substrate I'm using is that condensed dehydrated crud that comes with the terrarium set up (exo-terra) and that I did not get enough of the moisture out of it when I mixed it to water to "bring it to life" sorta speak and its wet all the the way through .. What do you all think? I am a little concerned for two reasons: one, I want my whites to be breathing fresh air and two because i will be keeping the terrarium in my room and would like it to smell nice in here...lol
thanks in advance.
Sometimes the substrate you use can give off a weird smell.
I think its the wet dirt smell you're smelling. The wet dirt smell if it is too strong is usually a sign your humidity's too high (ie. Your soil is too damp). Let it dry out a bit and the odor should start to go away. Or maybe it becomes like your own BO you just can't smell it anymore.![]()
right now I am using the compressed stuff that came with my exo-terra rain forest terrarium ( you have to mix it in a bucket with water to make it expand). I bought some of the jungle bed which i am looking forward to putting in there. I think the smell is just the from the substrate being too damp.. I guess ill wait and see if the smell clears up over the next few days.
